I want to write a post about my newest campaign which is one of the weirdest campaigns I've played yet. First time playing the disciples of the maw ogre faction, you start at the corner bottom left of the map. I quickly took over the entire valley inhabited by dwarfs and ratmen, by turn 10 I had around 2000 income. At this point, I could only go north east or northwest and either take on Karl Franz or Marienburg. I thought about it and went, you know what, I have a lot of income and I'm not currently at war with anyone so... I started dumping all my money into gifts to Karl Franz, who is strength rank 6 at this point in the game, at around turn 15. Before round 25, I had a non-aggression pact, trade agreement and military access with him. At that point, I walked over his lands and started taking cities up to the north from other empire factions. I was still far off from a defensive or even an military agreement with Franz, it would cost me at least 70000 gold to get the military agreement if I wanted to pay him off. But then I remembered the new feature they added that lets you gift settlements. Turns out if I gifted him a capital city he needed to get a full province, that was equivalent to more than 70000 gold somehow. He ended up giving me 5k as well as agreeing to a military alliance for the level 2 city. That's super busted and makes no sense. Anyway, it was perfect timing because literally the turn after I got like 4 factions that declared war on me. Needless to say Karl Franz with his strength rank 3 held them all back. At this point in the game, around turn 40-50, I was like, "okay, what do I even have to do at this point?" so I filled my lord's army with good troops and send him off on an expedition, I walked through the chaos wastes until I was on the other side of Cathay's gates along with the warriors of chaos. I tried to buy off and ally with the tzeentch demons and the warriors of chaos there to bring down the gates, but diplomacy and bribes failed because I had to give exorbitant amounts to all the factions there to get them to sign non-aggression pacts, so I just razed a few of their cities and set-up a camp in front of the great wall of cathay. I sieged the wall eventually and the bitch dragon queen herself came to challenge my obese ogres. I barely won a battle where they sent out their forces outside of the wall to break the siege (I survived with around 12 ogres and some empire crossbowmen I recruited along the way). I took the wall the next turn thanks to all the points I dumped into post-battle health recovery. That's where I stopped. I'm in cathay now, I was expecting to go in there and wage war on the fantasy chinamen but then I realized why their army was so weak: their kingdom rotted from within and the tzeentcian faction already conquered most of it. They somehow managed to hold onto the wall but I came in and dealt the finishing blow.

I really like the feature in Warhammer 3 where you can set up outposts in ally towns and then you get to recruit a few of their units. It was cool with have empire crossbowmen and empire knights in my ogre army. I can't wait to see in mortal empires where you get to interact with all the races. You'll be able to make some serious killer armies by recruited the best units from each race. Just imagine: an army with dwarf artilery, bretonnia cavalry, empire steam tanks, wood elf archers and black orc frontliners. It would be hard to be able to achieve something like that, but the army would be pretty much undefeatable unless it's taking on massive amounts of enemies at the same time.

I'm playing with a mod that disables Ursun's roar and the narrative campaign, by the way.

Could you use outriders with grenade launchers instead of rifles for even more murder?
well first i tried to replace the outriders with rifles. with grenades. but i found that i couldn't deal with flying enemies nearly as well.
then i tried to replace the wings (free company militia or halberds x4) with outriders with grenade launchers, but then i didn't have the ability to stop something from reaching my gunline in the larger battles involving more than 1 army. so they give you the stopping and staying power to deal with extra stuff that tries to flank.

They should keep the design philosophy of historical titles and warhammer completely separate, that just seems self-evident. I don't play the historical titles but they have magic in them now? What da?
So there have been three non-Warhammer Total War titles recently. Three Kingdoms has insane demigod heroes/commanders that can kill hundreds of troops on their own. Troy has straight up magic and god powers etc. They are at least partly based on Chinese and Greek mythology respectively so it's not totally egregious but it definitely shows CA's drift toward fantasy titles.

There's also Thrones of Britannia, which is more or less a historical title with no fantasy gimmicks. But it also has the unrealistically fast battles that all the other titles suffer from, and more importantly, it's widely considered the worst Total War ever made. So some people think CA has basically forgotten how to make good historical games.

That sucks to hear for the historical titles man. I tried to play medieval 2 but I found the controls just too clunky to handle coming from warhammer. They should have a team for fantasy total wars and one for historical total wars, and don't let people bounce from one side to the next or you'll find the fantasy stuff creep into the historical titles as well.

Are they actually good? I never thought I'd start reading the books but you've got me intrigued.
I've only read one so far, but it was pretty okay action-fantasy. Helps if you're already a fan of the setting, obviously.

The G&F series tends to be a little over the top in terms of swashbuckling action, compared to some other WHF novels that have a more """""realistic""""" focus on either grittier more evenly matched fights or army-scale battles (rather than the G&F standard of two plot armored badasses cutting their way through hundreds of enemies).

Sounds fun. I'm probably not going to read it any time soon because my reading time is taken up with the Bible and other Christian books right now and I'll probably forget about those books by the time I'm done but it sounds like something I'd enjoy.

Immortal Empires is out. I'm getting my ass kicked by beastmen with empire.
