My own father had difficulties urinating for years and had his prostate partially removed and that problem was fixed (though they did botch the surgery leading to chronic pain from nerve damage).
My father envies your father and wishes he had a bigger prostate to help him hold his pee. Doctors can always be of assistance if your prostate is too big, but they can do nothing if it is too small.

If you're at the age when you've started to worry about your prostate then waking up to take an urgent piss with an erection isn't going to present a problem. It'll be pointing the same way regardless.
