We should ban torches, they are a Nazi invention.

Also fuck that Afghanistan "war" with 59 dead. I know a guy who was in Afghanistan with the Bundeswehr. He said it was first and foremost just fucking boring. Not much of a war. 59 dead in 20 years. You get that number at the Eastern Front within an hour or so.

The German Defense Ministry took to Twitter to defend itself against criticism of the GroรŸe Zapfenstreich with torches in front of the Reichstag building. "Debate is necessary and important. Comparisons with Germany's darkest chapter disappoint us," the ministry wrote on Twitter.

The Bundeswehr, it said, is a parliamentary army. "As such, it has its place in the midst of society - on special occasions also in front of the Reichstag building." To accompany the comment, the ministry posted an explanatory video of the Zapfenstreich.

The Bundestag and the German government had thanked the roughly 90,000 men and women of the Bundeswehr deployed in Afghanistan on Wednesday for their difficult mission.

A final roll call in front of the Ministry of Defense was followed by a GroรŸer Zapfenstreich, the highest military ceremony of the German armed forces, in front of the Reichstag building. Present on Wednesday were representatives of the five constitutional bodies, including Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU).

The act of remembrance in front of the Defense Ministry also commemorated the 59 soldiers who lost their lives in Afghanistan over the past 20 years, 35 of them in combat or attacks.

Green Party politician Strรถbele criticizes ceremony
"They have paid the highest price a soldier can pay on behalf of his country. We are deeply indebted to them," said German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier there, who, like Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer (CDU), addressed the enlisted soldiers and guests.

The images of soldiers with torches in front of the Reichstag building have caused some alienation and criticism on the net. A number of Twitter users felt the scenes reminded them of dark chapters in German history. Other users disagreed, and several defense politicians reacted irritated to the criticism. The keyword #Zapfenstreich was at times number two in Twitter trends in Germany on Thursday.

Green Party politician Christian Strรถbele was among the critics. He called the GroรŸe Zapfenstreich a "militaristic ritual from Prussia and the Nazi era." Other Green politicians defended the ceremony in front of the Reichstag.

2. Why is there some thot marching with the....ugh...never mind.

I would even say that's a very low number for one hour. It's probably over 100 on average(if you count prisoners and maimed especially). The Ostfront was a real slaughterhouse.

And honestly, although Hitlers decision to fight to the end was retarded, the ferocity with which Germans fought while completely overwhelmed is unique in history and should forever be remembered.

Depends what do you include. For German military deaths the number is usually between 2.5 and 3 million and for the Soviets it's hard to find a reliable number. From 6 to 14 million dead soldiers you can find everything.

I read somewhere that the average on the Ostfront was around 20.000 casualties a week.

Mein Gott in Himmel.

I mean they still managed to snatch a victory here and there.

Little do they know that being White is also being a Nazi. These guys are in for a rude awakening as things unravel.

Yeah, soviet soldiers were literally treated like cattle by their generals. There is even a russian saying, where russian veterans see how german soldiers were treated after the war, and they say:"If we had lost we would probably have more money".
