I suggest getting egg layers.
Yeah I have layers here, I'm very rural. They are not much work at all, just make sure they have clean water and feed. You also have to clean out their coop once in a while. I put the used straw and chicken sh!t into my compost crib so it's a 100% sustainable system.

I have enough space for way more chickens but I don't need the extra eggs right now. I'm ready to take on more anytime though if I have to.

I put the used straw and chicken sh!t into my compost crib so it's a 100% sustainable system.
I'm testing in some garden beds chicken dung vs worm castings.

I get way more chicken dung than worm. So I think that favors worm will do better.

We are on second round of meat birds this season, they move around yard in pen fixing my lawn, after destroying it!
No store bought amendments for my lawn, it's working chickens.

feeds up some.
But we had a half one last night for dinner on the grill, can't beat it, and we will have a few more meals off the rest.
So for me worth added efforts.
Egg birds are going to be penned up for a week or so, seeded the last chicken pen areas last night, hens will eat all my buckwheat, clover, radish, turnips seeds.
Yes my lawn is differant than suburban labron worshippers lawn

Tomato update: I planted some with a couple of whole, up to 6in, shad fish under the plant, and some without. The ones without have much more foliage and a few fruit. The fish ones are smaller with less foliage, but more fruit on the cherry tomato plants. So far Im not that impressed with the fish method. Will update later on in the season.

Tomato with fish planted under them update: Pure shit, dont do this unless you are growing small, cherry style tomatoes. The big beefsteak and better boys do not like it. 1 plant is almost dead after only bearing 5 tomatoes. The small cherry varieties seem to like it tho, many fruits on them.

Cucumbers have been doing well. Pickles are the easiest thing ever. 1 cup white vinegar, 2 Tbsp Salt for the brine then cram as many cukes into a half gallon jar as you can. I like to cut up a whole onion and throw some garlic and dill in also. 24 hours in the fridge and you have crispy delicious pickles. I mark the jars and eat them in order, FIFO. They will last for about a month in the fridge.

I don't know if there's anything better than fresh pickles combined with ripe tomatoes. The two flavors go together perfectly. My tomatoes are behind tho. I've probably got another 2-3 weeks before I start getting decent tomato harvests.

I don't know if there's anything better than fresh pickles combined with ripe tomatoes.
Pickles are awesome for sure. The ones at the store don't taste great compared to homemade.

I've been meaning to bump this thread anyway because it's important.

So far my tomato plants are yielding properly.

I have a couple of rows of big ones supported by bamboo.





There are also a few dozen smaller ones of various types, some of them I have supported with cages.



I have been taking a few green ones every day just to keep the plants from getting too heavy. I didn't do this last year and I ended up wasting a lot of tomatoes that got eaten by bugs or otherwise ruined.

The green ones are good for certain types of sauce or you can just slice and fry in a pan after coating with flour, salt and pepper.




I have a bunch of other things doing well in the garden.

Parsnips.



Peppers.



Swiss chard.



Carrots. (They definitely need weeding)



Squash.



Corn.



Rhubarb.





I also have kale, spinach and some other things in the garden.

In the greenhouses I have herbs (basil, oregano, rosemary, lemon grass, chives, parsley etc.), peppers of various types, more tomatoes, lettuce, kale, Swiss chard, garlic and some other things I'm forgetting to mention.


















I'm taking peppers every day because the plants are starting too get heavy and bent over. The peppers ripen on a window ledge or you can use them green.



Here's that trick with the glass jars to make a mini greenhouse. I fill a larger jar with potting soil and then find a smaller jar that fits perfectly in the mouth of the larger one.



Like I said before, you don't get any drainage so you have to be careful with watering and really only small things like basil or parsley work well in a jar.

One last thing I want to show everyone. I have these wild raspberries growing on my property and the last two years I have transplanted some of them to other spots and encouraged their growth by uprooting everything else where they are. I now have a number of patches with nothing but raspberries. There are so many I can't possibly eat them all. I can fill a big bowl with them every single day.



Some of the stalks are at least nine feet long and the patches are nearly five feet tall.

Blackberries my dude. Make pie fillings and jams! You can freeze them too.

I need ideas on what to plant now (August) for fall harvest. Ive done collard greens and they have done well in the past.

Final update on burying whole fish under your tomato plants: The smaller varieties like cherry and the little gold ones seem to be doing well, bearing many fruits without a bush of leaves. The bigger varieties like the beef steak and better boys have not done well. I have been picking these a little early to prevent splitting or bug invasions. The numbers (fruits) are low and one plant has died (this plant had the biggest fish under it, a 6in whole shad).

I will be sticking to my old ways and just adding good compost next year.

A little over a year ago I made a compost pen out of scrap lumber and old decking boards. I made it like a small animal pen (3ftx7.5ft), leaving gaps in between the boards to allow air flow. I then started filling it with all our vegetable scraps (onion peels, orange skins, egg shells, past date produce that went bad, pistachio shells etc) and yard waste (leaves, small twigs, pine cones, garden clippings). I dont add meat or bones to avoid raccoons and other critters. To balance out the PH, I add my ash from my charcoal grill as well. I try to go out and turn it with a pitchfork at least once a week, but often more. I have gotten to the point where there is legit black soil compost now. Im almost considering making another smaller pen to hold the good compost and start another fresh batch. Who would have known watching stuff rot and decompose could bring such satisfaction?

Facebook Wonders if Canning and Gardening Groups Are β€˜Too Prepared’


In its relentless efforts to define extremism β€” and thereby save its members from extremist activities and coercions β€” Facebook has been asking canning and gardening groups if anyone is β€œconcerned that someone you know is becoming too prepared.”

A screenshot of the notice is making its way around the social media giant. In it, Facebook says, β€œWe care about preventing extremism on Facebook. Others in your situation have received confidential support.” It then offers a tab to click if you are someone who wants to hear stories and get advice from β€œpeople who escaped violent extremist groups.”

A Reddit user who posted his own screenshot of the notice said he got it after posting an ad for home-grown beef. According to CNET, a Facebook spokesperson says the extremism β€œwarnings” and offers to β€œhelp” are part of the site’s β€œlarger work to assess ways to provide resources and support to people on Facebook who may have engaged with or were exposed to extremist content, or may know someone who is at risk."

In early July 2021, WION News said that Facebook told them the offers are β€œa pilot for a global approach to prevent radicalization on the site.”
