The rooster is totally feral. He will run all the way across the lawn to come and attack me. I was feeding the chickens pork belly from my hand today and he gave me a kick, again. He was calm last year.

Can I rehabilitate this annoying little fucker or what?

I don't have roosters, i'm only guessing.

did you feed rooster first?

roosters job is guarding his females from other giant mofos that are plying them with pork bellies in anticipation of mating with said hens...I mean wtf does a rooster know about you?

maybe a guard goose can keep the rooster at bay? I'm just learning about guard goose lifestyle so i'll have to get back to you on who is dominant in that flock...

I'm thinking about getting one for next year to guard my chicks in the open pens from aerial predators

What kind of geese are you looking at? One of our chickens did get eaten on the rooster's watch in the winter, maybe alternate avians are the answer. We have these two ducks as well, and they go after the 100lb dog. They peck her in the ass. They too will stalk her across the yard just to peck at her. Nobody is safe on the lawn!

Birds are just the weirdest creatures.

not sure yet, I'm just starting my investigation.
it has to be able to stand up to pretty intense cold and prolonged snow cover without me pampering it with strange saunas and heated pools.

My nice hen has a swollen belly for about 2 weeks and is breathing hard, but passed an egg the other day.
She still eats, but not as much.
What to do? :(

I lost one of my year old hens the other afternoon. I’m not sure if it was a coyote or she just eloped with the neighbor’s rooster and has joined his harem.

These single mothers, I tell ya...

Question : The used, chicken shit filled straw from the coop I just cleaned out... can I spread it over/around my plants in the garden? Is that a thing?

Try feeding a bunch of grass or clover to the hen, greens for the digestive tract, to see if that helps. Feed her just a tiny piece of aspirin (1/4 tablet) every twelve hours for pain and inflammation.
Sounds like a blockage, an infection, or cancer.

Excellent compost, absolutely, build up any garden area by mixing in with the soil all year long.
Spread thicker around any areas you want to keep down weeds.

Don't do anything hasty. Try aspirin, fresh water, greens and give her time.

No I won't, but .410 is always ready anyway. ;)

I gave her about 1/2 tsp of broccoli powder/sulforaphane mixed with some cat food for lunch.

Isn't manure usually composted first? Because straight chicken waste is probably pretty alkaline? Something like that?

Turn it into the soil and it breaks down super fast, essentially feeding the bugs and fast cycling organic activity. It's great fast compost for building up soil that is unproductive. You could save it as a big pile first and flip it once or twice before spreading, maybe a few months, it's golden.

6.5 to 8.0

The pH of chicken manure varies according to age, diet fed to the chickens and the litter materials used. However, most chicken manure is neutral to moderately alkaline, with a pH in the range of 6.5 to 8.0.

Rooster discipline tip of the day:
I have used an empty two liter soda jug to clonk them over the head when they show aggression toward me, the empty soda jug is harmless to them, but it makes a good noise on impact and is lightweight and easy to wield. They run away and get the hint fast, then you just need to show them the soda jug later and they keep clear. They are tough bastards, so don't be shy about clonking them good whenever necessary.

Sitting on the back step watching the ten toddler chickens roaming the yard. It’s nice. They run around like a pack of raptors between long hunt and peck sessions.

The eldest one is already becoming a nice, sturdy rooster. He’s a natural shepherd for all the young ladies. He’s gonna be keeping the older girls in check too in no time. I think only 2 of the toddlers, besides him, are roosters. Much better ratio than 6/10 last year.

I moved the other ten littler little guys into the bigger closed coop yesterday and they’re doing good. Can’t tell how many of them are gonna grow up to be egg machines, but I’m gonna have my hands full no matter what.

Good news, good news and bad news.

I found her at sundown last night holed up in an awesome little hideout in a ground level tree hollow at the edge of the property.

The faint sound of a single chick cheeping in the quiet dusk air is what tipped me off to her fort. She (hopefully she 🀞🏻) was 12 feet away from mom with a heavy tangle of fallen branches between them. How did that little thing crawl all the way over there?

I had a hard enough time trying to get to it, I’m amazed it had the ability to get so far away. I returned the little black and brown puff ball to mom and left them for the night.

Today, she had already corralled a herd of 8 fresh chicks into the pig pen, but the same little chick was stuck outside the fence alone, wailing away. After I transferred everyone to the youngling coop, while watering and feeding them, I kept noticing the little one was always off in a corner or just sitting away from mom, struggling to move.

I just brought her inside and he’s got a messed up leg. Broken? Splayed? Tendon slipped? Obviously happened when it went venturing away from mom too soon. Her little knee is all swollen and red. The leg is kinda sticking out at a weird angle and her foot can’t flex open too far.

I’ve got it in a box under a lamp with food and water with a little ACV. What’s next? The internet says bandaid or popsicle splint or even amputate...? 😳

I try to seperate them and keep em watered . Usually croak on me after nursing them a week.
Dunno how you help them.
We lost 3 out of 60 so far this year. And high temps could stroke out a few more in coming weeks...
Good luck and thank God for the abundance!
