It is the drums.
Nah, I’m talking about that constant syncopated electronic droning dakadakadakadaka sound throughout.

Terry explained the process 10 years ago on some forum:
The synth was a MemoryMoog, one of the greatest music machines ever made.

I started with their preset sound 11, and modified it as I wanted. My MemoryMoog (still have it) had an on board sequencer, so I programmed the parts into the Moog (rhymes with "vogue") one-at-a-time, in the step sequence mode...it took a LONG LONG time to do. But I ran out of sequence memory, and couldn't get to the end of the song!

So I programmed certain changes to just repeat a longer section on the same note, and then used the "detune wheel" on the keyboard, set for the right interval (relative minor below).

I still didn't have QUITE enough memory to pull it off, so I resorted to holding down an E note with a cassette box jammed between the Eb and the F, and then actually pulled it out to manually reach other needed keys when necessary, all the while manually fiddling with the sequencer to "trick" it. Very cumbersome by today's standards, but in the end, it worked! (The one thing I am not saying here is exactly how the arpeggiation effect was achieved, as that is something I have always held back.)

All credit must go to my friend Bob Moog for the sound.

Here’s a live example, but this guy makes it look easy with his much newer equipment.

I almost ripped past this b/c I thought it was about the death of that guy from "Slipknot" - Joey Jordison.

Never been a fan of heavy metal - but I don't disparage those who are.

Dusty Hill was iconic - as was the band's sound.

Rush Limbaugh often used ZZ Top for his bumper music - he knew them personally and they created the bumper music specifically for Rush's show.

Time to crank up "Sharp Dressed Man" and "La Grange."

Would play sharp dressed man frequently in college before we would hit the scene to search for women.

ZZ Top are definitely in like my top three favs, but strictly pre-Eliminator. When they started using this doohickey, well, if I was Frank Beard I would have said Hell no. Even though Eliminator was great, it just sounds like a drum machine all the way through because of this Moog crap. At the time it was them being on the cutting edge of tech, fit right in with the whole Eighties scene and so was the biggest smash hit they had ever had, so of course they kept using it.

Yeah, they even mixed a bunch of the live drum lines so flat that they end up sounding like drum machines, but like you said, that was the style then. Everyone was copying that production style or just hiring the same half dozen guys for all of their new albums.

Like I said in my first post, I have a weird fascination with late 80’s-early 90’s soft rock and it’s specifically because of that Muzakification that was so β€˜of the moment’ that made everything sound tragically stuck in it’s time almost immediately and almost sanitized or something.

There’s probably some personal nostalgia going on too since that was all the radio had when I was first hearing music beyond nursery rhymes, it had infiltrated every genre, so it probably burned in me some kind of attachment.

I see, I went and viewed some of the live videos, cause the actual music video shows you nothing to help. I guess they did not do that when they played it live.

Yeah, the audio on the β€˜Legs’ music video posted ITT barely even showcase the synth. I’ve only ever heard that song on classic rock radio, but the first time I listened to it on halfway decent speakers, the full texture really jumped out at me.
