The legendary Duke Nukem Forever E3 2001 build has appeared on web for all to play.

To say that Duke Nukem Forever took forever to come out would be an understatement. It’s long development cycle was one of the early memes of the internet where most believed it wouldn’t actually release.

Eventually Duke Nukem Forever did finally release back in 2013, to a rather disappointing response by many of its fans for the mechanics introduced such as two weapon carry and a regenerating health bar.

It was at this point many would look fondly at the 2001 footage of the game which was showcased for E3 of that year. To many, it appeared that version of the game would’ve been truly a joy to play over what we actually got. A story of what could’ve been. Here’s a look:

A leaker on 4chan (via Duke4.net) shared what appears to be the long-lost build from E3 2001. It’s been reported that a build for this version of the game is now available to download. Of course this is a build of a game which never saw a retail release, so it is not complete.

Though this leaked build appears more complete than one would expect. According to a user the name of β€œx0r”, they state that nearly all chapters of the game are present, albeit there is a large chunk that’s unplayable.

Other interesting information about this leaked build is that all the E3 content is present. So one can finally play out what was shown over 2 decades ago which got us all excited for the game. This leak isn’t over either, as the leakers have stated their plans on releasing the full source code some time in the next month. Perhaps this might hopefully mean some talented and dedicated fans may give us the game we’ve all been dreaming of after all these years.

This is some of the biggest news the Duke Nukem franchise has gotten in a while. After the purchase of the IP by Gearbox and the release of Duke Nukem Forever, not much has been done with the Duke name outside of some re-releases of the older games and talks of a film. There was also unfortunate statements made by a Gearbox employee who said that the company had no plans on returning to the franchise.

What do you think of this news? Are you going to check out the leak to play some good old fashion Nukem goodness, or are you going to be like Gearbox and leave the Duke as a relic of the past?

What a great leak. I wonder where this build has been sitting for the last 20-ish years to now be released by an anon on 4chan? I wonder what kind of story it had? Being stagnant on one hard drive for all this time or possibly changing hands many times for it to now wind up in our leakers hands now?

Somebody has uploaded a gameplay test run on jewtube already showing off the build. Can be seen here:

Interesting how the 'Ego' meter was already a thing in this version of the game and not a creation by Gearbox to backhand ridicule the Dukes ultra masculine frame. The menu design and aesthetics really remind me of Deus Ex as well, a game also released in that year.

But yes, this build is rough! I wonder if dedicated modders will have enough resources and overall game direction to make something playable while still remaining true to the games original design. It doesn't look like there is much story set up here to make something without it veering off into the realm of "interactive fan fiction" and it becoming something it never was supposed to.

It was supposedly in the possession of Gear Box. They bought the rights to the Duke Nukem Franchise from 3D Realms. Before that it was owned by 3D Realms.

It's an unfinished demo. From what I have heard it's about 80-90% complete. Of course completing that last 10-20% would be no easy task for a bunch of amateurs in their parents basement. There is a difference between making mod and making an actual game or in this case finishing a game. They could screw it up. Of course the whole thing might not even be any good. I don't think anyone has played it.

The dude in the video I linked above played it. I mean, it's just a bunch of maps being selectable from a menu but we don't know for sure what the context itself is that links them all together. We require something like an official design document from 3D Realms to truely recreate it in Quake engine like any good modder worth their salt could.

I bought Duke Nukem Forever on Steam during a summer sale years ago. I means years ago. It was probably 2017. I got for like $5. So I don't hate it that much. That doesn't mean I think it's a great game or anything because it's not. But it's not as awful as people make it out to be. But if I had paid $60 for it I would have been pissed off. It's like a 6.0 to maybe 6.5, 7 might be pushing it. Using a 5/5 rating I would say 3/5.

It looks like a game from the mid to late 2000's and it plays like a game from that time period and it released in 2011. It looks similar to Doom 3 but Doom 3 still looked better. I don't even like Doom 3 that much but it's a better FPS than DNF. Doom 2016 and of course Doom Eternal blow DNF out of the water. I have it installed on my PC but I haven't played it much. I got at far as the part where you can slap the wall titties in that alien hive.

Civvie11 did a video on it and apparently the DLC campaign is better than the main campaign. I have all the DLC as well. I usually pick DLC up during sales. It's a nice way to get that last few dollars off the gift cards I have in my desk drawer.

I doubt anyone would have liked the 2001 DNF either. The newfags would have been like "DNF 2001 is the best game ever" and the oldfags would have said "old games good new games bad" like they do now. Unlike now where everyone just doesn't care for DNF or outright hates it.

I didn't pay $60 for DNF so my view on it is kind of biased I guess. It's like a half priced bargain game Gear Box stuck a $60 price tag on.

Also because of some of the humor and stuff in the game it got hit kind of hard. Yes it has juvenile and offensive humor and subject matter. But so did Duke 3D. To this day you will still find faggots willing to shit on the game for the humor and other stuff.

But I doubt people would have liked the 2001 version of DNF that much.

I like how they talk about a movie as well. They are too late. Arnold is too old to play Duke Nukem now. He is basically the main inspiration for the character obviously. Sure Duke pulls a lot of inspiration from other action movie stars. But Arnold was the obvious frame work. There isn't any other white guy in Hollywood now that could pull it off. If you want a Duke Nukem movie just go was Predator. Dutch is Duke, or as close as you can get.

They would just fuck it up anyway.

Randy Pitchford of Gearbox admitted a couple years ago that it was part of his Duke Nukem purchase, but was goy veying over how to monetize it. The fact that nothing ever came of it probably means some old 3D realms crew decided to kick things off themselves if he couldn't even be bothered to charge for it after all his big talk of "Oh we're totally going to keep making Duke games. Yeah, for real."

Although there's always the possibility he pissed off some of his own employees, which he's been known to do by promising big bonuses during crunch and then chicken shitting out after release.

Randy is no longer managing the game department- which makes me think this leak is the teams way of seeing if there’s interest. The next gearbox game is tales from the borderlands 2, which indicates they are struggling.

There is too many new games and actual good games to sit around and cry about a mediocre to average game from 2011 and to get wrapped up in a what could have been situation with an unfinished version of the game from 2001. That's my take on it. If you want a good modern FPS just get Doom 2016, Eternal, Wolfenstein The Old Blood and so on. You can try The New Order but The New Colossus wasn't very good. Also there is always Ion Fury if you want a build engine game with modern design. Otherwise just go play Duke 3D.

Id should buy the rights to Duke Nukem, though that might be something Bethesda should do since they own Id now. Then they can go get Wolfenstein away from Machine Games because those Swedish faggots don't know how to make a good Wolfenstein game. After that they can find out who owns the rights to Heretic and Hexen and buy them up. Then have the people who made Doom 2016 and Eternal start working on new modern versions of those games. We could also use a new Quake game like the first one but with better graphics and actual bosses this time.
