Just did. Made my compie freeze up twice. Also puts crappy outdated drivers on it. Do NOT install this. SERIOUSLY

In another episode of Windows 10 update blunders, Microsoft is catching some heat for rolling out outdated and unsuitable drivers, which could put some machines at risk, Windows Latest reported (via TechRadar).

Microsoft's umpteenth Windows 10 update flub comes on the heels of a recent survey that revealed 60% of IT professionals believe Windows 10 updates are "rarely useful," according to an investigation conducted by Susan Bradley, a network consultant and AskWoody.com writer.

the new windows update (version 2004) absolutely kills any network drive connection using SMB v. 1-2 it seems.
Many NAS devices use older versions of SMB, but Windows should still work with them if you want it to. Nope. Instead, there are some registry edits that allow the connection to establish UNTIL NEXT BOOT. After rebooting, the reg key reverts and the drives refuse to connect again Not only have I seen this at work, I have seen this at home. Eventually, your machine will update to version 2004, because you either don't select the "remind me tomorrow" button on the update banner or whatever. Absolute street-shitting level of QC at Microsoft these days. Terrible, broken products, buggy updates, shit breaks every time you do install them. I hate Windows, I'm not a Mac guy but they are absolutely rock-solid in comparison. Different hardware ecosystems and everything but still, Windows used to just *work* too. It's only when they fired all their white engineers and outsourced to street-shitters that it became the current dumpster-fire that it is.

You'll get a window popping up informing you that your current version of windows 10 is 'nearing the end' or some crap and needs an updating. You'll have an option to restart/update now or schedule it. It doesn't auto-install thankfully.

I think they do it on purpose just to flex on you. "Yeah, I fucked you system up, what are you gonna do? That's right, not a damn thing!"

I haven't done it myself yet but I read a tip that you should check the box that designates your network as "metered connected" and then you can set the update settings so that it doesn't auto download over metered connections

Unsurprising to me, puts me off how they neutered the media player so you had to go to their app store to find something to play movies.
VLC player is your friend. It will pretty much play anything and I think it will even play Bluray movies now. I have an external Bluray drive.

Most people know not to download any new Windows update these days. They are all filled with bugs and other issues. That update they were pushing this past May, I believe it was called the May 2020 update or something. Well it was causing a bunch of issues. I couldn't install it cause Windows was saying my PC wasn't ready for the update yet. One day I went to my PC back in late August and the update was ready to be installed. Of course by then all the issues with it had been fixed. I usually wait till they force updates on me.

TLDR; wait a few months. The issues will be fixed. Let everyone else be the guinea pigs.

Oh trust me, I have VLC and I imagine everyone else who has to put up with Microsoft has gotten it too.
I had it on a previous build. I upgraded to a X570 board and a R7 3700x a few months back and I haven't installed it yet.

This kind of crap is why my servers still run Windows 7- don't have to worry about system changes outside of my actions.

Heck, I'd even run Windows 8.1 as a compromise on my other machines, but a handful of newer games don't seem to like that, so I'm stuck with Win10 on them.

I'm not sure if that actually does anything, I've heard that before, I've also heard that windows won't update without intervention but I've also had to show up places because their systems all updated overnight and stopped working. It could be users just being stupid but it causes problems.

The other thing windows 10 does is supposedly a local version of "peer-to-peer" in terms of updates. If a windows machine takes an update, it shares that update with all other windows 10 machines it can reach on the network. When you have an org with 100s of windows boxes and your network suddenly throttles, open up Wireshark and see that those boxes are absolutely saturating the network with bullshit. The first time I encountered it, I was told the above info by somebody on experts exchange. It didn't make much sense but those boxes definitely start using shit loads of bandwidth.

Those of us stuck with vanilla Windows 10 for whatever reason have no say in the matter, unfortunately.

Important question, if you install a new OS, do you have to redownload everything?
I don't want this update, but I really don't want to lose all of my data.

Obviously, nothing is as bad as Windows, or ever will be, as it's the shittiest software ever in the history of the world, but MacOS has been gradually getting worse and worse since Steve Jobs died. It's enough to make Linux start looking good.

Microsoft is now a jobs program for pajeets, but Linux recently adopted a "Code of Conduct" designed to drive out white male programmers. If in 2030 you want a computer system that doesn't crash every five minutes, you'll have to hire an underground white hacker who installs an old version of Linux plus 278 patches he's carefully selected to serve customer needs without including bugs added by diversities whose code cannot be criticized without violating the Code of Conduct.

Is it the one in which, among other things, you also you can't permanently turn off Windows Defender (it turns itself on again after a reboot)?

Definitely never install this.

Windows is the Coronavirus operating system, remember. It deliberately fucks with you, and allows other people to also fuck with you a lot. MacOS is the same, just with fewer exploits for other people to fuck with you.
