Crappie season is my favorite. They bite hard and fight hard. I always enjoy bass fishing around the 4th of July. It’s usually nice and hot, and I’ve had plenty of good strikes.
I’m a bank fisher, wish I could splurge and get a boat, but I just can’t. But I’ve got a nice tackle box that has a sling on it, and I throw that puppy over the shoulder and I’ll walk the entire bank finding spots.
Do you use bait caster reels?

Get a kayak. Boat stands for bust out another thousand. I learned on spinning gear and now I primarily use bait casters. When I go kayaking I have 4 baitcasters and one spinning rod. Spinning rods are good for throwing really light weight baits like weightless worms, finesse jigs, jerk baits, and small crank baits.

I rented a kayak last year and paddled around and caught some perch. I’ve never been able to use a bait caster for whatever reason. About a decade ago I bought a cheap $15 one, and tried to practice casting in the back yard and birdsnested it over and over. So now I stick to open face spinners.
My favorite lure is a black and yellow frog.
Ive also done a lot of trout fishing in river, but only with ultra lite poles, never a fly rod.

edit: and when I mentioned getting a boat, certainly not a fancy one. I’m talking maybe a little aluminum tracker with a 15hp outboard for the kids and I. Something small.

You need to make sure that whatever bait you are throwing falls into the weight parameters that are on the rod. That way the rod loads properly. I'd recommend starting on the heavier end of what the rod says it will handle. Also when I first started using a baitcaster I turned the brakes on the reel all the way up and turned the spool tension knob up to high. You just got to get used to thumbing the spool as the bait is flying through the air and stop the spool once the bait hits the water.

Yeah I had no clue about any of that. If I see another cheap one I might buy it and rig it up and try again. The kids are really getting into fishing so I’ve been spending plenty of time outside with them stringing poles and working on casting. They haven’t caught anything so far this spring, but they haven’t given up!

The top water bite is one of the best because you can watch the fish come up and destroy the bait. Yeah you should get something cheap that allows you to leave the bank. All the best honey holes need a boat of some kind to reach them.

Certainly do on a lake for sure. I grew up with farm ponds and gravel roads. I’ve probably walked more miles of pond bank than some people here have walked in their pathetic basement dwelling mommy titty sucking lives.
As I’m getting older though, I sorta want to get out more on the water. Ive got a buddy who has a nice boat, but never takes it out. Sits in his driveway.

Farm ponds are the shit. Thats all I was doing before I got my kayak. Using Google earth to locate them. I still hit the farm ponds, usually during the week after work when I just want to get a couple of hours of fishing in.

I spent very little time with my grandpa growing up, he wasn’t a good person, drifted from the place doing drugs and drinking heavily. One memory I do have when I was probably 8 years old is sitting on the bank of a farm pond cat fishing as the sun went down, and he was smoking cigarettes non-stop. I remember he had tattoos all over his arms, and he was rough looking, but when we started putting hooks and bait on the poles he was natural at it, and for just that short amount of time we fished I could tell he wasn’t anxious or β€œwanting to go.”

I still have a couple of the kids style button-press casting rods that work fine for my local needs. They are cheap too.
I've got 2 Zebco 33's in the garage right now I take catfishing. They work great and are probably older than some of the basement dwellers here that mommy makes hotpockets for.

I got one of those for 5 bucks on sale at Walmart. I've landed several 20lb catfish on it. I generally don't catfish much. I like power fishing, working on my accuracy and pitching to targets makes me diamonds.

Pulled from my neighbor's 6 acre tank (about a mile from me). They dug it 7 years ago, and hit 3 springs while doing it. The next year they put the bass, bluegill, and sunfish in. Next month they are putting in $1000 worth of crappie. I'm lucky.

This one pushed 6 lbs, and crashed a 3" Storm Chug Bug popper about 2 feet from the bank.

New Zebco is shitty. I've been searching for a good reliable spincaster for the kids and I currently have a junk pile. It was hard to get anything last year. If anyone knows of something post the link.

Agree. I have stepped my pole game up some and bought a Johnny Morris spinner reel. Was over $100 for the reel alone, but it was good. As far as buying stuff for the kids, I have also not found anything worth a damn in awhile.

Man I would have a hard time dropping that much on one reel. I'd buy 2 of these:

I used to buy Pflueger Presidents, but tried the Okuma for my ultralight trout rigs a couple years ago and loved them. Not as many bearings as the Pfluegers (7 vs 10), but is like 15-20% cheaper. I can attest that these Ceymars are great reels and every bit as smooth as a President. I have 4 now.

I have trout fished the White River in Arkansas for years. Love it there. Trout fishing and camping at Bull Shoals is medicine to me!

I grew up trout fishing the streams and lakes of the Eastern Sierras and the White Mountains in AZ. There is nothing better than a secluded stream in the mountains. There is a pretty fair trout stream about an 1 1/2 hours from where I live now, but hey, if I want a real chance for a big fish, I go to my neighbor's down the road.

I want to check out the trout fishing near Eureka Springs AR.

For spinning reels, I can't recommend Power Pro braided line enough. I use the 10 lb line with all my trout and bass reels. Casts great with NO line twist, and has the diameter of 1 lb mono.

I don't know that I'd recommend it for baitcast reels (never got the hang of those, I spend more time fixing than fishing).

Did you fill your tackle box with poppers? These come in size fetus-adult.
