That was always Yang's biggest problem. He truly believed in democracy, even as the corrupt officials did nothing except try to ruin him. He should have planned a coup, gotten rid of the corrupt politicians, pushed back the empire and once peace had returned, then he could have attempted to reinstate democracy and try again. Still prefer Reinhard and the Empire though.

Gen. Shenkopp legitimately encouraged him to do just that, too!

Every character is so extremely well-written that they all have their obvious personality defects; of course, with the Japanese author's inherent bias.

That's why you got this, in particular, with Yang Wen-li's love of "democracy":

(I can't post images and can't seem to find the image linked anymore, but you'll know it)

>What is that?
>What do you mean, "what is that?"
>That's petty officer Louis Mashengo
>I know that
>Why is he on this ship?

lol, yeah, I know exactly what you're talking about. It's a great show. Have you seen the remake? I've heard mixed opinions on it. Apparently the animation is great but the lines and characterization is bastardized. For myself, lotgh = story/plot/characters > animation quality
